Violence against women, two Red Benches for Piacenza and Cremona

It is emblematic of the rejection of violence against women and, with its scarlet colour, reminds us of the void left by the victims: as part of the Week of Giving, there are two Red Benches placed on the campuses of Piacenza and Cremona, bearing witness to the path that Università Cattolica is taking on the issue of gender violence.

Installed in the Giardino dei Semplici in Cremona and in the pathway between the main entrance to the campus and the Collegio S. Isidoro in Piacenza, they were inaugurated in the presence of Professor Raffaella Iafrate, the Rector's delegate for Equal Opportunities, the Deans of the Faculties of Economics and Law and of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences Marco Allena and Marco Trevisan, and Professor Pierpaolo Triani representing the Faculty of Education. Also present at the inauguration ceremony was Professor Anna Maria Fellegara, Vice Rector of Università Cattolica.

“The Red Bench is a symbol that connects, it has a synthetic function that encloses within itself a great complexity and depth” ‒ Professor Iafrate pointed out. “Our University's reflection on gender-based violence, on the theme of equal opportunities and attention to the dignity of the person, has always been framed within an anthropological, cultural and ethical perspective that starts from the vision of each person in his or her differentiating uniqueness, and consequently condemns all forms of prevarication.”

“We thought of linking a well-known symbol like the red bench to the Week of Giving, because we are convinced that the relationship with the other is closely linked to the theme of giving of oneself and is central to the fight against violence. We hope” ‒ concluded Iafrate ‒ “that those who pass by, sit down for a chat or a moment's rest on this red bench, may feel stimulated to think about its meaning and may feel the necessary urge to act.”
